一篇好文章，或一場好演講，應該是長短句錯落的。
長句就好比風景畫的背景表現細膩，可以讓觀賞者有身如其境的感覺；短句，呈現出來的是畫龍點睛的效果，讓這幅畫更難以忘懷。因此，一篇好文章，或一場好演講，應該是長短句錯落的，才能表現出語言的節奏與力道，讓人們更難以忘懷。
來看這段賈伯斯說的話：
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life,
and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.
And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.
If you haven’t found it yet,
keep looking.
Don’t settle.
As with all matters of the heart,
you’ll know when you find it.
And, like any great relationship,

長句可以豐富內容，卻不一定是最好的選擇。透過長、短句不同同的節奏，可以讓你的語言更有表情。因此，無論在口語或寫作上，都要依照情況做出聰明的選擇。
現在，讓我們透過一些小練習，看看你學了多少合句、複句的技巧。
1. 你能分辨獨立子句和從屬子句嗎？
(a) While I was getting my lunch
當我在吃午餐時
(b) I went to the post office
我去了郵局
(c) Even though I’m generally a calm person
雖然我算是個鎮定的人
2. 下列句子的連接詞正確嗎？如果錯誤，該如何修改呢？
(a) I went to visit Shanghai because my sister was living there or I always wanted to visit.
我去上海旅遊，因為我的姊姊住在那裡，我一直夢想去那裡。
(b) I want to finish reading the book so I took it on the bus with me.
我想讀完這本書，所以帶著它一起巴士。
(c) I forgot my notebook today so I also forgot to bring my USB drive with the important files on it.
我忘了帶筆電，也忘記把有重要資料的隨身碟帶著。
3. 試著把FANBOYS填入以下欄位：
